Medication errors are among the most common and most preventable adverse events in assisted living and personal care homes. This course prepares caregivers and unlicensed staff to assist with medication administration under supervision — with the pharmacology foundation, the documentation discipline, and the regulatory awareness the role demands.
The course provides caregivers and healthcare workers with the foundational knowledge and skills to safely assist patients with medication administration. Participants learn about common medications, proper handling, dosage calculations, and safety protocols. It is designed to meet regulatory standards, ensure competency in assisting with medication, and foster safe patient care environments.
The course includes eight hours of supervised clinical orientation, completed at an approved skilled nursing facility, personal care home, or assisted living facility. It is where the classroom material meets a real medication pass, a real cart, and a real resident.
Every hour is directly supervised — by a licensed Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, or by a qualified licensed designee approved by the facility administrator — at a ratio of no more than four students to one supervisor. Students never practice independently, never perform tasks beyond the medication aide scope, and are never used to cover a facility's staffing shortfall.
Resident privacy is absolute during the placement. No protected health information may be recorded, photographed, or shared outside the clinical setting, and a breach results in immediate removal from the site.
Completion requires passing the written examination and demonstrating medication assistance competency. Graduates receive a GAHCTC Certificate of Completion.
