Teaching is a different qualification from holding a card. These courses are for practising providers who already hold a current American Heart Association provider card and want to train others — charge nurses building competency in their own units, educators running skills days, and clinicians who want to teach BLS, ACLS, or PALS as part of their practice.

Candidates must hold a current AHA BLS Provider card, complete the AHA Instructor Essentials course, and be monitored teaching a course before being aligned with a Training Center and issued an AHA Instructor card.
The American Heart Association ACLS Instructor course trains experienced providers to teach ACLS on behalf of an AHA Training Center, focusing on advanced emergency cardiovascular care. Candidates must hold a current AHA ACLS Provider card, complete the AHA Instructor Essentials course, and be monitored teaching a course before being issued an AHA Instructor card.
The American Heart Association PALS Instructor course prepares experienced providers to teach Pediatric Advanced Life Support on behalf of an AHA Training Center, covering teaching methodology, hands-on skill stations, and learner assessment. Candidates must hold a current AHA PALS Provider card, complete the AHA Instructor Essentials course, and be monitored teaching a course before being issued an AHA Instructor card.

There are four steps, and they run in order. You must hold a current AHA provider card in the discipline you want to teach. You complete the American Heart Association Instructor Essentials course, which covers the teaching methodology common to every AHA discipline. You then complete the discipline-specific instructor course. Finally you are monitored teaching a course by an AHA Training Center Faculty member, who signs off that you can run a class to AHA standard.
One thing to understand before you start: an AHA Instructor card is issued through an AHA Training Center, and every instructor must be aligned with one in order to teach. GA Healthcare Training & Consulting is American Heart Association Faculty, so we deliver and monitor the instructor training itself — we will talk you through Training Center alignment as part of the course rather than leaving you to work it out afterwards.
Instructor candidates are assessed on two things at once: that your own clinical skills still meet provider standard, and that you can teach and correct someone else performing them. Both are required. Timelines vary with your provider card status and how quickly a monitoring opportunity can be scheduled, so ask us and we will map out a realistic sequence for you.

American Heart Association instructor courses are open to candidates who already hold a current AHA provider card in the discipline they want to teach. If your provider card has lapsed, you will need to renew it before starting — we can schedule the renewal and the instructor course together.
Yes. Instructor Essentials is the American Heart Association course covering teaching methodology shared across all AHA disciplines, and it is required before the discipline-specific instructor course. It is taken once, not once per discipline, so a candidate going on to teach a second discipline does not repeat it.
After your instructor course you teach a real class while an AHA Training Center Faculty member observes and assesses you against AHA criteria. It is the final step before your Instructor card is issued. We will arrange a monitoring opportunity rather than leaving you to find one.

Yes. Each discipline needs its own instructor course and its own current provider card — a BLS Instructor card does not let you teach ACLS or PALS. Because Instructor Essentials carries across, adding a second discipline is shorter than the first.
